Road traffic accidents in Malta drop 4.2% in 2018

Despite road traffic accidents increasing by year-on-year 1.8% to 3,512 in the last quarter of last year, the figure dropped by year-on-year 4.2% to 14,378 overall in 2018, according to the latest statistics published by the Maltese National Statistics Office (NSO).

The total number of road traffic fatalities during 2018 was 18, one fatality less than in the preceding year. The most significant amount of road traffic casualties involved passenger cars (59.3%), followed by motorcycles (29.9%) and goods-carrying vehicles (6.7%), the NSO says. Four cyclists were hit by passenger cars, and another cyclist was hit by a goods-carrying vehicle.

The highest number of road traffic accidents was registered in Birkirkara (354 cases), followed by Marsa (186) and Ħal Qormi (173).
